Captain Mike's Merchant Mariner Credential is issued by the United States Coast Guard and authorizes commercial charter operations. This license shows that Captain Mike has met federal standards for operating a commercial vessel and is qualified to guide customers safely on Tampa Bay waters. The credential is a requirement for any captain running a commercial fishing or tour operation.
The credential applies to all G&A Outdoors charters, whether customers are looking to try bowfishing for the first time, pursue advanced techniques, or simply enjoy the water with family. Every trip operates under this license, which means Captain Mike carries the responsibility and training that comes with commercial maritime work.
G&A Outdoors offers four-hour bowfishing charters designed to suit different skill levels and group types. The beginner trip is perfect if you've never picked up a bow before—Captain Mike handles instruction on the lightweight Vader carbon fiber bows and AMS bottle reels, which are designed to be smooth and easy to manage. The standard four-hour charter puts experienced archers in productive shallow-water areas where you'll have plenty of chances to shoot. For those ready to push harder, the pro-level trip focuses on speed and precision in the most active spots.
Families bring kids of all ages. Captain Mike provides child-sized life vests and snacks to keep younger anglers comfortable during the four hours on the water. The boat itself is a 22-foot Alweld center console equipped specifically for bowfishing, with the bows and reels mounted so you have a clear shot and stable platform. You can also request a scenic charter if you'd rather spend the time watching dolphins, manatees, stingrays, and sharks in their natural habitat without focusing on shooting—this trip covers the same four-hour timeframe and gives you a relaxed way to see the bay.
Captain Mike handles all the necessary permits and licenses for Tampa Bay, so you don't need to worry about those details. Bring comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sunscreen—the Tampa Bay sun reflects hard off the water. The boat has a cooler, and while Captain Mike provides beverages, you're welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks to stay refreshed. If you're interested in keeping your catch, ask Captain Mike about that when you book; he can explain the regulations and what species are in season.
Arrive at the dock ready to go over the safety briefing and learn the basics of how to use the bows if you're new to bowfishing. If you have any questions about regulations, species you might encounter, or tips for a successful trip, Captain Mike is available to talk through those before you head out. The trip durations are flexible—the standard offer is four hours, but Captain Mike can extend at no extra charge if you're having fun and conditions are good.
Tampa Bay's shallow waters and diverse fish population make it ideal for bowfishing year-round. You'll find Sheepshead, Flounder, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Ray, Spadefish, Mojarra, Tilapia, and more depending on the season and tides. Captain Mike knows the bay intimately—the tides, the weather patterns, and where fish are feeding at any given time. That knowledge combined with the USCG credential backing his operation means you're on the water with someone who takes the work seriously and has the training to keep everyone safe and having a good time.
